VOLUNTEERS
An intrinsic and unchanging principle of Avalon is that no-one gets paid; we are all unpaid volunteers. This means that everyone who joins us, whether to work on our permanent programmes with the intellectually disabled or one of our new projects, such as relief for the homeless, shares our primary ethic: meeting unmet needs; that is what enables us to guarantee that every dollar donated goes to our causes (& you can nominate, if you wish, where you want your donation to be spent, see Donations). It also means that we are always in need of volunteers!
We are always in need of help: in our ongoing programmes for the intellectually disabled - the drop-in, our weekly outing with 6-10 guests, amongst others; and new ventures mean more volunteer hours are needed! Our new Relief for the Homeless project, in which we meet at various locations with the Vinnies food vans, has created an urgent need for more hands to collect and distribute blankets, clothes and other basic needs. This means a commitment to a few hours at night; we are usually out between 6.00 p.m. and 11. p.m.
What does Avalon offer that other - but certainly very deserving - organisations do not? What makes the difference for many is that we offer real, hands-on, coal-face interaction with those in need; secondly, we do not do things all 'our way' - we welcome fresh ideas, promising initiatives, and we have found our volunteers to be the best source.
If you can help in any way, whether you have one hour a week to spare or 40 hours, whether you have numerous skills or none at all - WE NEED YOU!
